History Buffs: One of the oldest resorts in Tunisia, Hammamet is full of impressive remnants of its past. Pay a visit to Pupput, which holds the remains of a Roman settlement. Don’t forget to leave some time aside to visit the resort’s famous Kasbah.

Thrill-seekers: While the beautiful beaches are perfect for catching some rays, you’ll find there’s plenty to more to do. Choose from an astonishing array of water sports, including water-skiing and windsurfing or choose something a little more out-of-the-ordinary, such as taking a ride on a camel.

Romance: With a stunning backdrop and some outstanding restaurants, this beautiful town has long been attracting honeymooners and couples to its shores. Take a ride around the town in a horse and carriage, before enjoying a meal under the stars in a beachside restaurant.

Language: The official language spoken in Tunisia is Arabic. However, with a long association with France, French is also widely spoken. While Tunisians seem particularly adept at languages and tend to be fluent in English, it’s worth packing a phrasebook for those simple but essential phrases.

Currency: You’ll need to exchange your pennies and pounds for Tunisian dinars, but wait until you get there.

Local time: There is no time difference between the UK and this part of Tunisia.

On foot: Walking is the best way to see the old town and explore shops in the centre. 

By bus: The bus service is reliable and regular. You can pick up bus schedules from the tourist office in town, which is conveniently located right next to the bus station.

By taxi: Taxis are in plentiful supply and can be hailed from the roadside or booked in advance. It’s worth agreeing the fare before you travel or ensure that the meter has been set back to zero, as it can save arguments when you get to where you’re going.

By louage: The Tunisian answer to car-sharing, louages are mini-vans that take groups of passengers all going to the same place. While these are good if you’re travelling beyond the resort, taxis are a better bet for getting around town.

International Festival of Hammamet: Visit between July and August and you could be treated to the sights and sounds of the International Festival of Hammamet. A five-week festival it attracts luminaries from the worlds of jazz and theatre from all over the planet. Held in the International Cultural Centre, which as once a sprawling, 1920s villa, there are performances throughout the day and into the night. Expect everything from laid-back music to exciting theatrical productions and breath-taking ballet performances.

Yasmine Hammamet Festival: Held on the 12th July, this is the most significant celebration in the Tunisian calendar. A gigantic jamboree that is dedicated to all things Arabian and artistic, you can expect live music, art exhibitions, poetry recitals, colourful parades, sizzling street-food, and fantastic fireworks.
