Things to do

Head away from the beaches and experience a change of pace in the desert or in the island’s big cities. Houmt Souk is the island’s capital, where you can experience traditional bazaars and local museums, giving you a taste of the country’s rich heritage. The desert is the pace to head for an exciting adventure, either by 4x4 or buggy, and the exciting Djerba Explore is a great day out for the whole family.

Getting around Djerba

By taxi: Taxis are the easiest way to get around the island. Licensed ones are bright yellow and can be easily spotted and flagged down. They’re generally a cheap and efficient way to travel.

By bike: The island is fairly flat and is very quiet and scenic, making it ideal to explore on two wheels. Most hotels will provide bikes for hire. 

By buggy: Buggies are one of the most popular ways to get around, so be sure to book yourself on an organised excursion and enjoy a fun tour of the island.

Events in Djerba

Ulysses Festival: In July, Djerba hosts the International Ulysses Festival. The event celebrates the island’s heritage and the Greek hero, Ulysses. As legend has it, Ulysses landed on the island during his voyage, so he holds a lot of significance there. The festival features open-air theatre and dance performances, as well as a dedicated children’s programme to keep the little ones entertained. 

Pottery festival: The town of Guellala is the pottery capital of Djerba, and some say, the whole of Tunisia. In August, a festival aimed at promoting the pottery industry runs for ten days, with a variety of exhibitions and events for you to get involved with.

The weather in Djerba, Tunisia, is great at any time of year. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, there’s never a bad time to visit. The long summer starts as early as April, bringing with it highs of 34°C and up to 14 hours of sunshine a day; perfect for long days lounging on the beach. Things start to cool down in September, but temperatures are still in the low 20s (°C) during the autumn. For the coolest weather, come in the winter, when the resort is slightly quieter and temperatures average a comfortable 14°C, which is ideal for getting out and exploring.
