Nissi Beach in Cyprus
No visit to Ayia Napa is complete without spending the day at Nissi Beach. This sheltered bay on the South East corner of Cyprus is home to a Blue Flag beach that's often listed among the world's top beaches. A lively daytime vibe gives way to a more tranquil atmosphere as the sun sets.
Family-friendly beach
Nissi Beach is popular with families and it's easy to see why. Located in the Famagusta District, this gorgeous coastline boasts one of the finest white sand beaches on the island, complete with crystal-clear turquoise waters and great facilities. The shallow, clean water is ideal for kids to splash about in, while there are no less than five beachside restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat or pick up a cold drink to take back to the beach.
Relaxing yet lively
Although the beach can be busy during the day, there are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas to rent as well as quieter spaces where you can lay your towel. The beach is just a stone's throw from Ayia Napa itself, and by day lively beach parties take place regularly. There's also a water sports centre on the nearby island where you can take part in all kinds of water-based activities.
Shopping, dining and partying
Away from the beach, the pretty little village of Nissi is home to authentic Greek tavernas serving up the freshest fish and seafood you'll ever taste. Many have their own little playgrounds where the kids can let off some steam.
There's also a selection of supermarkets and souvenir shops on Nissi Avenue. This is the best place to shop for all your beach essentials, from inflatables and buckets and spades to sun cream.
While you're here, why not tuck into some Greek mezze? This selection of little dishes includes something to suit all tastes, from stuffed vine leaves, savoury taramasalata and lemon potatoes to small portions of stifado, with sweet treats like baklava to finish.
After dark, there are some great live music bars and karaoke bars where you can relax with a drink, or sing your heart out. It's a five-minute bus journey or 15-minute walk to Ayia Napa where you'll find some of the best shopping around at designer boutiques. Shaded, leafy squares are the ideal place to enjoy lunch or a drink outdoors, while by night the resort is buzzing and has earned a reputation as the spot to party.
A splashing good time
If you're visiting Nissi Beach with the kids, why not take them for a day out at WaterWorld? This award-winning waterpark has an ancient Greece theme and 18 thrilling rides for all ages. Relax in Aphrodite's Baths or the Aeolos Whirlpool, whizz down death-defying slides like the Kamikaze Slides, Thunderbolt and Lightning, Apollo's Plunge, and The Fall of Icarus, or just stay poolside with a drink or snack and watch the kids have all the fun.
Water sports and mezze: it's all here at the beach
There's something for all ages at Nissi Beach, whether you're looking to work on your tan and relax, try your hand at water sports, or sample some authentic Greek mezze.
