Gran Canaria Nightlife: Bars & Clubs

As a popular holiday destination all year round, sunny Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands is known for its buzzing and exciting nightlife. The island also benefits from warm winters and very warm summers, and has been a popular destination for winter breaks for many years. Many restaurants in Gran Canaria remain open until after midnight, something that is almost unheard of in the UK, so expect to start your night out later than you would back home, and keep going until the small hours!

Whether you're looking for hours on the dance floor every night or a nice quiet cocktail bar for the evening, this island has it all. Here are some of the best destinations for nightlife in Gran Canaria.

Playa del Inglés

In the bustling resort of Playa del Inglés on the south coast you'll find about a dozen centres with nightlife for every taste. One of the most famous Gran Canaria nightlife complexes is the Yumbo Centre, the heart of Gran Canaria's gay scene. Many restaurants in Playa del Inglés also provide entertainment so you can enjoy excellent live music while you eat.

Las Palmas

As the capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas offers plenty of choice for both hardcore clubbers and anyone who prefers a quiet, laid-back setting. The hub of the city's nightlife is Plaza de España in Mesa y Lopéz, where you'll find the atmosphere remains electric until the early morning. Many of Las Palmas' bars can be found between the beach of Las Canteras and the port, which range from cocktail lounges to discos.

Puerto Rico

You'll find a decent mix of bars and clubs in Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria's southwestern coast, which has two big commercial complexes: the Europa Center for family-themed nightlife, and the main strip where you'll find the resort's big clubs. However, the atmosphere here is generally more low key than Playa del Inglés, so Puerto Rico is a great fit for families and couples looking for nightlife in Gran Canaria that's a little less busy.

Gran Canaria nightlife tips

Bear in mind that many clubs in Gran Canaria don't get busy until after 11pm, like the rest of Spain. Many venues stay open until 5am or 6am, so if you're coming here in the summer, you can dance the night away, almost until sunrise, in fact. Because of the island's popularity with English-speaking holidaymakers, much of the entertainment provided in Gran Canaria nightlife venues and hotels is in English, especially in the coastal resorts like Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico.
