Church Of St Jaume in Alcudia

As Majorca's oldest city, you'll find plenty of historic buildings on your visit to Alcudia. While exploring the narrow streets, make sure you take the time to see the Church of St Jaume, a neo-Gothic building in the heart of the Old Town. If you're driving to Alcudia, there's a small, free car park nearby.

Originally built in the 13th century, the church was rebuilt in its current style after being destroyed by heavy rains in 1870. As you arrive at the church, you'll see the large arched gate, an effigy of St James, and a high bell tower, home to the oldest bell in Majorca dating back to 1309.

Stepping inside the Church of St Jaume, you'll see the vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and the long single nave. Look out for the Gothic altar, the medieval wall paintings, the renovated organ and the marble staircase leading to the balcony above the main entrance. There are are a number chapels on both sides of the church, including Saint Joseph Chapel, Saint Sebastian Chapel, and the Baptism Chapel. If you want to attend a service, mass is held daily at 7.30pm.

After exploring inside, go to the parish museum to see artefacts from the ancient church. Browse pictures, carvings and robes, along with a 14th century chalice. Then, go back outside to explore the rest of Alcudia's Old Town, including the Jakober Art Foundation and Gardens.
