St Agatha's Tower

See one of Malta's most impressive attractions with a visit to St Agatha's Tower. Just a 20 minute drive from Qawra, it's the perfect way to spend an hour or two if you're exploring Mellieha Bay.

Also known as the Red Tower, it's only a couple of Euros to get in, so it's nice and cheap for the whole family. Built in 1649 as a watchtower, St. Agatha's Tower has seen plenty of use during its time, including through both world wars.

Arriving at the tower, you'll be struck by the unique red colour. This makes for a fantastic photo opportunity, especially with the steep stairs in front of the entrance, and the stunning scenery. The tower was restored towards the end of the 20th century, so you'll get a great idea of what it looked like when it was first built.

Learn about the tower's history as you make your way through the interior. You'll discover how it could last during a siege, and see interesting artefacts like old coats of arms. If you're lucky, the helpful guides might even help your kids put on some armour for a picture. Make sure you save plenty of space on your camera for the views when you get to the top though, as you'll have spectacular panoramas over Mellieha Bay, the Ghadira Nature Reserve and out towards the island of Gozo.

After spending some time on the roof, head back down to level ground and continue your sightseeing at the Skorba temples. Then move on to Mnajdra before settling down for dinner with a view at Qawra Point.
