Skorba Temples

Visit one of the world's oldest freestanding structures with a trip to the Skorba temples. Just over ten minutes by road from Qawra, it's a great place to do a bit of sightseeing on your holiday in Malta.

The island has a number of ancient temples, and Skorba is one of the oldest. The temples date back over 5,000 years to around 3600 BC, while the earliest remains found at the site are more than a thousand years older. This makes Skorba a hugely important prehistoric site.

You'll need to buy a ticket for the Skorba temples before you go, which can be bought at the Mgarr Local Council building.

Alternatively, if you're going to do lots of sightseeing around Malta then consider getting a Heritage Malta Multisite Pass. This will give you access to other sites such as the Mnajdra and Hagar Qim Temples, and attractions like Valetta's National Museum of Archaeology.

Arriving at the World Heritage Site of Skorba, you'll see the huge megaliths that form the temples' ruins. Imagine passing through the entrance when the temple was intact, and think of how difficult it must have been for the builders to get the massive stones to the site across the rural terrain.

Make sure you check that you're going to Skorba when the site's open, as you can only visit on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 9am and 4.30pm. After your visit to the Skorba temples, continue south to see Mnajdra. Or head north to explore St. Agatha's Tower, before making your back to Qawra to spend some time at the Malta National Aquarium.
