Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Nice
While in Nice, pay a visit to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, one of the city’s most unique attractions. With its traditional Russian architecture and interesting history as both a Russian-owned place of worship and a French landmark, the cathedral’s a must-visit sight.
Arriving at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, otherwise known as the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, you’ll see a huge 20th century building unlike any other in the city, topped with impressive ‘onion’ domes and spires.
Today the cathedral’s an important place for Russians living in France, as well as a popular tourist attraction. Going inside, the cathedral is decorated with elaborate icons, interesting woodwork and artwork brought over to France during the Russian Civil War.
If you’re planning on going into the cathedral, bear in mind that you’ll have to keep your legs and shoulders covered or you may be refused entry.
After taking pictures of the cathedral in contrast with the surrounding French buildings, make your way to Parc Naturel Departemental d’Estienne d’Orves for views across the local area. Gare de Nice Ville, the city’s train station, is just a short walk away, making it easy to travel on to other local towns for a day trip along the French Riviera. Monaco’s just 20 minutes away by train, where you can explore the Oceanographic Museum, Prince’s Palace and the Jardin Exotique.
