Barcelona Gothic Quarter

Discover medieval Barcelona with a visit to the historic Gothic Quarter. Close to La Rambla and a short walk from the port, the Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic as it’s known to the locals, is a beautiful place to spend the day as you browse independent shopping boutiques and relax with a coffee at a family run cafe. As you walk through the Gothic Quarter’s narrow winding streets, you’ll be surrounded by impressive buildings that date right back to the 14th century. Turn a corner, and the mazy streets emerge onto vast medieval squares, flooded with sunlight.

With its striking architecture and charming atmosphere, it’s easy to wile away the hours as you explore the area on foot. Once you’ve got your bearings, spend some time discovering the area’s history and pay a visit to the gothic masterpiece that is Barcelona Cathedral, or see Roman ruins at Museu d’Història de la Ciutat (Barcelona City Museum). Placa del Rei (King’s Square) is a must-see, which transports you back to the city in times gone by. It’s also said to be the place where Columbus was welcomed home from his first voyage to the New World.

If you enjoy shopping, you’ll love the Gothic Quarter. From the small, locally owned shops in Calle Avinyo to the well kept high street stores on Calle Portal de L’Angel, it’s a great place to buy souvenirs and gifts. At night, the area comes to life as tourists and locals dine side by side in traditional restaurants. There’s lots of lively bars in the Gothic Quarter, making it a great alternative to the chaotic nightlife at La Rambla.
