Mercat de la Boqueria
Housed in an impressive modernista building just off La Rambla, Mercat de la Boqueria is a bustling food market and a must-visit for any trip to Barcelona. As soon as you set your eyes on this colourful market, prepare for a brilliant attack on the senses as you hear the shouts of the vendors and the smell of fresh, locally sourced produce.
As you step through the iron entrance and walk through the market, you’ll be greeted by all kinds of stalls. Colourful displays of freshly pressed fruit juices, traditionally cured meats and delicious seafood make this a perfect place to go for a snack or spot of lunch. With locals and chefs bartering alongside tourists, you’ll quickly realise this is not just a visitor attraction. It’s a traditional Catalan market selling some of the freshest food in the city.
For delicious meals, there’s a number of stalls offering snacks, meals and drinks. From salt dried cod to traditional Catalan snails known as ‘cargols’, there’s plenty of opportunity to try out new foods, although you should be prepared to perch on a high stool or even stand up while you eat.
For the very best deals, go right into the depths of the market and take your time to browse the stalls. The more well known stalls near the entrance to the market put on a colourful display, but you’ll get more for your money further inside.
Refreshed after sipping on a cool watermelon juice and energised by traditional Catalan food, you’ll be ready to head back out to La Rambla or go exploring the neighbouring Gothic Quarter.
