Kadifekale Castle in Izmir

Hike or drive to Kadifekale Castle which lies on a hillside in Izmir. The castle dates back to the Roman times and was created when Izmir was known as Smyrna. The ancient city was rebuilt after a series of earthquakes by order of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in 178 AD. Smyrna was later split into two and the castle came under Byzantine rule, which restored the structure and décor to feature styles from the era.

The castle is freely accessible and open for visitors who want to explore its walls, watchtowers and plain interior. See the remains of the Ottoman 14th century mosque, the relics of public baths, inns and a bazaar found inside the fortress walls.
