Ruins of Tlos

If you love ancient sights and exploring while you're on holiday, don't miss the fascinating ruins of Tlos. Around 40 minutes from Fethiye by car, you can drive yourself if you have a hire car, catch a dolmus or visit as part of a tour group.

An ancient hilltop citadel, Tlos was an important Lycian city which dates back over 4,000 years. Having been occupied by the Romans, Byzantines and Ottoman Turks, there were people living at the site continually until the 19th century.

Arriving at Tlos, you'll be surrounded by the imposing Akdalar mountain range, which rises up in front of you despite already being high up. In the other direction, you'll have spectacular views of the Xanthos Valley below, so don't forget to bring your camera with you. You'll want to take lots of photos of the interesting ruins too, which include everything from houses to baths, churches and even a Roman amphitheatre.

You'll see the ruins of an Ottoman castle, as well as stunning Lycian tombs cut right into the rock.

When you get hungry, there are a couple of cafes by the car park, where you can grab a bite to eat and a refreshing drink. Try some traditional Turkish tea in the shade, as you prepare to leave this amazing site.

After your visit to Tlos, make the short trip south to the Saklikent Gorge and explore another fascinating place. When it's time to sit back and relax, head back to Fethiye and make your way to Calis Beach, where you can spend the rest of the day soaking up some warm Turkish sunshine.
