Medina Tunisia and Medina Sousse
Did you know that an old Arab quarter of a North African city is called a medina? The resorts of Sousse and Tunis both have great medinas, so let's take a closer look at what they have to offer.
Tunis is the capital city of Tunisia, and it's home to the fascinating Sousse medina, which is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in the 9th century, the original walls of the medina have disappeared, but the intricate maze of ancient streets remains. They're brimming with souks, mosques (including Al-Zaytuna Mosque) and a wealth of historic structures like the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul. No matter where you turn, there's something interesting around every corner.
140km south of Tunis, you'll find Sousse. Built by the Aghlabids in AD 859 on the foundations of the original Byzantine wall, Sousse's medina is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there's lots to discover here. The towering walls spread over 2.25km and measure 8m high, and within them you'll find a wealth of religious and historical monuments, plus lots of great places to do some shopping.
The Great Mosque is one of the main attractions this part of town, along with the Ribat; this 8th century palace is Sousse medina's pride and joy. If you want to pick up a souvenir, head down to the buzzing bazaar that is Souq er-Ribbar. Other highlights include Boujaffar Beach, Ribat palace, and the Soula Shopping Centre.
