Benidorm Old Town Spain

If you're looking for something typically Spanish during your holiday to Benidorm, you'll want to visit the Old Town. Compared to the hustle and bustle of the promenade, Benidorm Old Town is a completely different world, and a great chance to dive into some authentic Spanish culture and history.

Exploring the Benidorm Old Town

The whole area is bursting with character and charm. Begin by wandering around the maze of narrow, cobbled streets and discover shops, cafés and pubs tucked away in little side streets. The blue-domed church and rows of white houses help Old Town Benidorm keep that authentic feel.

The Church of San Jaime

Probably the most prominent landmark in Benidorm Old Town, this church has existed since the mid-18th Century and is noted for its blue-tiled cupola. The best time to visit is during one of Benidorm's religious feasts, when you can look forward to delicious food as well as some great celebrations.

The ruins of Benidorm Castle

Just to the south of Old Town Benidorm is the city's ruined castle, built to defend this region from pirates. Although it was later abandoned, some of the original walls still survive at the balcony viewpoint, nicknamed 'The Balcony of the Mediterranean'. Here, you can enjoy excellent views of the coast, especially at sunset.

Restaurants

The Benidorm Old Town is a foodie's heaven, as the streets are filled with quaint restaurants serving all kinds of tasty treats, including Spanish delicacies. One of the most popular streets in the Old Town is ”Tapas Alley', nicknamed because of the numerous Tapas bars that run down it. It's located in the heart of the Old Town so be sure to stop by for a miniature paella and a meat board or small seafood dishes, whichever you prefer.

Shopping in Old Town Benidorm

There are also many shops in the Old Town. In fact, the shops around the beautiful pedestrianised plaza are amongst some of the most popular in Benidorm, if not the entire Costa Blanca. From fashion boutiques and supermarkets to gift and souvenir shops selling local hand products, you'll find almost everything sold here. Whatever time of year you visit, you're bound to find the perfect gift for that special someone. Just remember that most shops will be closed during siesta time in the early to mid-afternoon, so aim to arrive here in the morning or late afternoon.

Markets

If you love markets, then don't forget to visit the fruit and vegetable market, which takes place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Benidorm Old Town also holds the El Cisne flea market every Sunday and one Saturday per month between the bypass and the old N-332, and you'll find other big street markets all over Benidorm, especially in the summer.

Beaches near the Old Town

The main beach, Playa de Levante, is easily accessible from the Old Town via Av. Ruzafa and Av. Martinez Alejos. This is one of the biggest and most glamorous beaches in Spain and is lined with dozens of bars and restaurants, although it can get rather busy during the peak season during July and August. If you'd prefer somewhere a little quieter, head to Poniente beach on the other side of Benidorm, where you can try some windsurfing and enjoy a great view of the sunset.

Mundomar

If you're a fan of wildlife then take the kids to Mundomar in the east of Benidorm. This is one of the most popular family attractions where you'll be able to see a wide range of animals and those kids' favourites, creepy crawlies. From parrots to marine animals, the park has lots on offer. Unlike many other animal theme parks, Mundomar enables you to learn about its species and get close to them, and also supports endangered species such as the ruffed lemur.

Terra Natura

After visiting Old Town Benidorm, come to this spectacular zoological park, where you'll find everything from venomous creatures to elephants and tigers. Go on a donkey ride, ride on the zip wires above grazing elephants, or watch an animal show, theatre performance or concert.
