Big and buzzing Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria is one of the island's oldest party resorts, pulling in visitors since the 1960s to make the most of its gorgeous beaches and nightlife. Head further afield to the striking volcanic rock known as Roque Nublo, which dates back over four million years and was an ancient place of worship. Or go on a day excursion to Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, and see its enchanting cathedral and museums where you can learn all about the history of the island and the discovery of the New World.

It’s no secret that the beach is the place to be in Playa del Ingles. Its popular with holidaymakers and the long stretch of soft, golden sand shelves gently into the warm sea and has all the comforts you could need for a great day at the beach. Facilities include disability access points, showers and kiosks selling ice-cold refreshments. Whether you’re after a relaxing afternoon on the sun loungers or a thrilling water sport adventure, the beach has it all. Sporting activities include jet skis, sailing, windsurfing and banana boats, to name a few.

The resort began to develop in the 1960s to accommodate the influx of tourism to the island. Since then, Playa del Ingles has turned into the largest resort in Gran Canaria. Purpose built hotel complexes, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance to ensure that you have everything you may need for a relaxing holiday.

Vibrant nightlife

As well as its fantastic beaches and hot weather, Playa del Ingles is recognised as being a great place for a night out. Themed and specialised bars and clubs are extremely popular here as the streets illuminate with colour and music streams out of every bar. Fruity cocktails and dancing is in store at the many nightclubs and bars open until the early hours.

If you’re after belly-laughter and fabulous entertainment, head to Ricky’s Cabaret Bar for a guaranteed great night out. Grab a drink and settle in for a memorable performance filled with audience participation, comedy and a whole lot of song and dance.

For something with a little more style and sophistication in the early evening, head to Eiffel Bar for a truly relaxed atmosphere. The knowledgeable and friendly bar staff serve highly recommended wines and delicious cocktails made with only the finest spirits. This is a great place for drinks with friends in this trendy, French themed bar.

Getting around Playa del Ingles

By bus: This resort is well served by buses, with frequent services to other coastal resorts and attractions inland such as theme parks and natural sights. Travelling within resort is very cost effective if you're not planning to hire a car.

By taxi: You’ll find taxis everywhere here. Getting back to your hotel or to the beach by taxi is a cheap and easy option, and convenient when you're carrying heavy luggage or shopping. However, taxis can be expensive for long journeys so remember to agree the fare before you set off.

By car: If you’re planning on making longer journeys and exploring the island, hiring a car is the best option. Gran Canaria has good roads and many hire car companies at the airport and resorts.

Events in Playa del Ingles

Carnival: Gran Canaria is one of the biggest islands in the Canaries, so when the wildest festival of the year comes to town, it’s not to be missed! In February, carnival arrives with all its splendour and the city of Las Palmas explodes into life. Carnival begins with the crowning of the carnival queen, and includes parades, colourful floats, costumes and lots of parties.  

For film buffs: Every March in the city of Las Palmas, around 40 minutes’ drive outside this resort, the Gran Canaria International Film Festival takes place. The event features film screenings open to the public, and discussion panels.

Temperature: Average daytime highs of 26-28°C in summer, and about 21°C in the winter. 

Best time to visit: If you're longing for lazy days on the beach and plenty of time in the water, the best time for Playa del Inglés holidays is May to October, when beach weather is virtually a guarantee. However, if you're keen to explore the rest of Gran Canaria, then visit in the winter, early spring or late autumn, when temperatures are more pleasant for walking around.

Gran Canaria enjoys sunny weather and mild temperatures for most of the year, with some winter showers drying out into long, hot summers. Between May and September, mercury hovers in the mid to high 20s °C, often close to 30°C in August.
