Maspalomas Dunes

Sinking your toes into soft, warm sand is a holiday highlight for all ages. If hanging out at the beach is your idea of holiday perfection, you'll love Playa de Maspalomas. Here you can lounge and play along 6km of golden beach or run free among the far-reaching Maspalomas Dunes and play desert adventurer for the afternoon.

Playa de Maspalomas

There's no shortage of stunning beaches in Gran Canaria, but Playa Maspalomas is rightfully considered one of the best. It has picture postcard fine white sand fringed by the turquoise blue sea. There's plenty of space so you can find your own little spot. It's also been conveniently divided into zones, so you can sit in the area that you're most comfortable in.

You'll find family-friendly areas where no one will mind if your beach ball accidentally strays onto someone else's towel. The sea also shelves gently away from the beach, so you'll relax knowing it feels safe for the kids to play and paddle.

If you're here as a couple and prefer not to have small children running around you as you soak up the rays, you'll find quieter areas to sit away from the kids.

There are also nudist and LBGT-friendly zones too.

Thrilling water sports

The clear blue waters around Gran Canaria will tempt even the most committed land-lubber into the water. At Playa de Maspalomas, you can take your pick from the wide variety of water sports on offer. Get your thrills water-skiing, or wind-surfing. Swim and snorkel. Take a one-day diving course to explore the crystal clear depths, or climb on board the banana boat for some high-speed fun.

Relaxing on a Blue Flag beach

The highly prized Blue Flag awarded to Playa de Maspalomas gives you reassurance that you'll be paddling and playing in outstandingly clean seas. You'll also find lots of conveniences close to hand to make your day even more enjoyable. You can hire a sun lounger and parasol along the beach in all the sections to make soaking up those rays as comfortable as possible. There are also shops, stalls, cafés, and restaurants to suit all pockets and tastes if you're feeling peckish or need to stock up on your holiday essentials

Maspalomas Dunes

The Maspalomas Dunes, which rise up behind the beach, are simply stunning. Sculpted by the wind, you'll find plenty of photo opportunities. They're also somewhere to have a lot of fun. Let the kids run free up and down the dunes, jump on a sand board or book a camel ride to explore further. You'll feel like a desert adventurer; after all, it's only just over 300 miles away from the Sahara.

Discover the Special Nature Reserve

As well as being great fun for the kids, the Maspalomas Dunes are also designated as a Special Nature Reserve. There are plenty of walking trails through them, where you could discover local wildlife including the famous Maspalomas giant lizard, a harmless lizard that can reach up to 80cm. Just remember to apply plenty of sunscreen (to yourself, not the lizard), and bring a hat and a bottle of water.
