Cala Figuera Spain

There are lots of great places to eat in Mahon so you'll be spoilt for choice wherever you decide to dine, with everything from authentic Asian menus to traditional Italian trattorias available. But for the most stylish evening meal, make your way to the fashionable district of Cala Figuera, which sits on a cove away from the main harbourside area. You'll have your pick of trendy restaurants on the waterfront, each with a view of Illa del Rei (Hospital Island) in the middle of Mahon harbour.

If you want to walk to Cala Figuera, it'll take about half an hour along the Moll de Llevant promenade. You might prefer to get a taxi back after your meal, especially if you've had a few glasses of the local pomada (gin and lemonade). As well as the tapas and fresh seafood you'd expect to find in a Spanish harbour town, local specialities to try while you're in Mahon include fideau (paella with noodles instead of rice) and pa'amb oli con jambon (garlic bread topped with cured ham, olive oil and tomatoes). You can even claim to be sampling a local delicacy if you add mayonnaise to your meal, as it's thought to have been invented in Mahon.
