Fira Del Fang Pottery Fair
Majorca might be the ever-popular star of the Mediterranean with its pristine beaches, mountainous landscape, and azure-blue waters, but there's more to do on the Spanish island than take in the beautiful views and relax in the warm sun. Embrace local culture and traditions on your next Majorca holiday with a visit to the Fira del Fang Pottery Fair.
Mallorca's famous pottery region
This annual week-long fair is held in Mallorca's famous pottery region of Marratxi and is one of the most important craft fairs to take place on the island. Local artisans have been crafting earthenware in a traditional way here for over 300 years; making it the ideal place to learn everything you need to know about Mallorca pottery.
The fair started in 1983 with the aim to preserve and promote the crafts and traditions of potters and other ceramic workersof the island; thousands of people now attend each year. Held in May at the Pottery Museum in Sant Marcal, the fair runs at the same time and in the same place as the Biennial Pottery International Exhibition, so you can tie everything into one jam-packed day trip.
What to expect
Enjoy daily demonstrations taking you through the traditional methods used by craftsman and educational workshops of clay, Raku, or Trencadis amulets. Join one of the workshops and a talented artisan will guide you as you try making your very own piece. If it turns out you're not such a dab hand at creating pottery, you needn't worry as they are lots of expertly crafted pots, plates, jugs and tiles just waiting to be picked up as a holiday souvenir before you leave.
With over 50 stalls brimming with pottery, you can buy everything from modern design-led items to more traditional terracotta pieces. It's not all about the pottery craftsmanship either, as you'll also get to take in more local culture with regional folk dancing, drummers, percussion concerts and performances by 'xeremiers' (local musicians). There's loads of activities to keep children entertained too, making it ideal for all the family.
Tapas route
You won't leave the fair hungry either, as there's a fun tapas route run by the restaurant owners around Marratxi. Expect cheap drinks and delicious tapas served in ceramic dishes as you take part in an evening of eating and drinking typical Mallorcan cuisine. You'll bar hop and sample local dishes as you go, all made easier by a mini train that takes you between each one. There's no better way to round off a day at the Fira del Fang Pottery Fair.
Getting here
Just 11 miles away from the capital Palma, getting to Marratxi is quick and easy. Hop on one of the special bus shuttles from Marratxi to Palma, and you'll be there in around 30 minutes. You'll be able to explore the Fira del Fang Pottery Fair and still have time to take a quick dip in the sea afterwards.
