Necropolis De Son Real in Majorca

Discover the fascinating history of Ca'n Picafort with a trip to the Necropolis de Son Real. Take a short walk along the coast from Platja de Son Bauló before arriving at this mystical ancient cemetery that sits alongside the sea. With around 110 tombs, the Necropolis de Son Real is one of the most important funeral sites in Majorca.

As you walk through the cemetery you'll see graves dating back to the 7th century, so take your time as you imagine life on the island many centuries ago. During excavation in the 1950s, around 300 bodies were found at the Necropolis. Some were found buried in the foetal position, while other corpses were found tied up, with emptied skulls, cremated or accompanied by weapons and jewellery.

Now, visitors are free to walk among the tombs at this haunting, fascinating sight, so remember your camera and take plenty of pictures at this unique ancient burial ground. Although most of the artefacts found at the site are now on display in Madrid, it's worth visiting the Interpretation Centre which tells you more about the story behind the burial site.

When you've finished exploring the site, take a walk through the neighbouring pine forest or hike along the rocky coastal path towards the nearby towns and beaches. If you're feeling energetic, you can swim out to S'illot Des Porros which also has its own ancient cemetery. Don't forget to take plenty of water and sunscreen, especially during the hot summer months.
