Cala Varques in Majorca

For a day relaxing in the golden Mediterranean sunshine surrounded by picture-perfect scenery, make sure you spend a day at Cala Varques on your holiday to Calas de Mallorca. A quiet unspoilt beach, Cala Varques is less than ten kilometres up the coast from Calas de Mallorca.

As you emerge from the path that leads to the beautiful cove, you'll see lush green pine trees on the cliffs above you. To the right, a rocky ridge gives the beach a rugged and natural feel. Despite the wild appearance, Cala Varques is perfect if you have younger children, with its soft pale sand and gentle shelving.

The turquoise sea stays shallow quite a long way out, so it's ideal for paddling, although you can head further away from shore for swimming and snorkelling. There aren't many facilities on the beach, which adds the the unspoilt feel. Lay down your towel in the sand and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

Make sure you take plenty of water and some snacks if you're planning to spend the whole day there, as there's no shops, although there is a little bar where you can grab a cool drink.

If you want to explore a bit, there are some low cliffs and interesting rock formations to the south of the beach, so make sure you pack suitable footwear.

After a restful morning at Cala Varques, spend the afternoon exploring the Santuari de Sant Salvador. Or head over to Pollenca on Majorca's north coast and spend some time at the Museo Marti Vicens.
