Capri Island Tips
Unbelievably glamorous and a favourite with A-list celebrities, Capri Island has everything you need to treat your family or partner to a slice of the high life. While most people come for the glorious sun-kissed beaches, holidays to Capri are also for those who enjoy upmarket shopping, cool cafés, and outstanding restaurants where you have to book a table six months in advance. However, beyond the glitz and the glamour there's plenty for those who want to get out and about and soak up some of the local history.
Capri Town
To get things started, take a trip around Capri Town. Almost entirely pedestrianised (so you don't need to worry about traffic if you've got the little ones with you), it's the perfect place to find a backstreet café and watch the world go by.
While there are plenty of shops for label-lovers, you might prefer the boutique stores where you'll find handmade goods such as leather sandals, delicate jewellery, and some of the best limoncello you've ever tasted.
As the sun starts to head towards the horizon, find yourself an authentic ristorante, order an aperitif, and pick your favourite from the selection of homemade pasta.
See the island from above
To gain a new perspective of the island and to leave the hustle and bustle all behind you, head to the Seggiovia del Monte Solaro. A wonderfully old-fashioned chairlift, you can enjoy a 15-minute ride to the top of the highest mountain on the island. As you go up you can look down on the whitewashed, sugar-cube houses and take some amazing pictures.
Once you've arrived, you'll find a nearby café serving coffee, snacks, and the famous Italian gelatos for the kids. If heights aren't your thing and you prefer to keep both feet on the ground, it's possible to trek up Mount Solaro. Bear in mind that it's a steep hike, so you'll need to pack water and sun cream.
Romantic mosaics
If you're travelling here with romance in mind, don't pass up the opportunity to visit the Chiesa di San Michele. Built in the 16th century and located in Anacapri, this beautiful church was built in the shape of an octagon. However, it's the interior that loved-up couples flock to see. Inside, the floor is an elaborate mosaic made up of tiny tiles that tell the story of Adam and Eve. For the best view, climb the spiral staircase and you'll find a viewing gallery at the top.
Shop 'til you drop
If you're a dedicated shopper and want to come home with something supremely stylish, head to La Parisienne in Capri Town. This is the shop where Audrey Hepburn bought her signature Capri trousers. Other famous customers include Jackie Onassis and Clarke Gable. You can commission a pair of bespoke trousers, which you'll be able to wear by the end of the day.
The Gardens of Augustus
Also known as the Krupp Gardens, the Gardens of Augustus are a botanical park and a must-see for anyone with a love of flowers. Marvellously manicured and tranquil, the gardens show off the best of Italian flora. It's also worth packing your camera because, in addition to some blissful blooms, the gardens offer a 180 view of Capri Island, including Mount Solaro and Faraglioni Beach.
