Visit the Castle of Skiathos
Go on a day trip to the northern tip of the island and visit the Castle of Skiathos. The locals know it as Il Kastro, and the medieval fortification is a fantastic way to spend some time away from the beach on your holiday to Koukounaries.
Skiathos is quite a small island, so while the castle may seem far from Koukounaries, it's still only around a 40 minute drive. The bus service doesn't run there, so unless you book on to a tour, the only other way to get there is by boat. For the ultimate memorable day out, hire your own vessel from Koukounaries Beach and set sail to the north.
Whichever way you get there, you'll be amazed by the sight that greets you once you arrive. Founded in the mid-14th century, the Castle of Skiathos is perched atop a rocky cliff, majestically looking down over the bay. Walk along the narrow approach to the main gate, which was only accessible by a wooden drawbridge in times gone by. Take in the stunning panoramic views before you wander among the old ruins. Imagine yourself staring out across the Aegean trying to spot unwelcome visitors, as you looked to protect what was Skiathos' main settlement for almost 500 years.
After you've explored the castle, head back down to Kastro Beach and cool off in the turquoise waters. If you're feeling hungry, grab a light lunch and sip on a refreshing drink at the little taverna that overlooks the bay.
When you're ready to head back to Koukounaries, make your way to La Bussola Bar for a couple of drinks while you look over the photos you've taken that day.
