Skaros Rock Greece
Proudly jutting out into the Aegean waters at 20 metres above sea level, the Skaros Rock was originally built to protect the coastline from pirates. Although it was left in ruins by a series of powerful earthquakes during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the fortification is now a beautiful tourist site and must-see highlight of Santorini.
Your journey to Skaros Rock starts on foot from Agios Georgios church, in the quaint and tiny village of Imerovigli. From here, you'll walk towards the headland with incredible views of the water and the volcanic caldera. As the rock looms in the distance, look out for the charming town of Oia across the water.
After navigating many steps, the rock will be within sight. At the end of your walk, you have two options: either follow the straight path directly to the rock, or take the more difficult, narrow route going around it. Whichever path you take, you're guaranteed heart stopping views across the caldera.
As you reach the Chapel of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis, take the time to catch your breath, drink some water and breathe in the fresh sea air. If you time it right, you'll have the joy of watching the sun set in the distance which is a truly magical way to complete your day.
If you've got the energy, take a detour to Chapel Theoskepasti on the other side of Skaros Rock. From this remote location, the panoramic views are absolutely breath-taking so don't forget your camera!
