Church Of Paraportiani Greece

If you're going on holiday to Mykonos, a trip to the Church of Paraportiani is an absolute must. Perched near the main harbour entrance overlooking the sparkling waters of the Aegean Sea, this church's setting is a huge part of the attraction. To give the Christian landmark its full name, the Church of Panagia Paraportiani translates as the Church of Our Lady of the Side Gate, thanks to the location of its old entrance.

The church is actually made up of five churches that were built between the 15th and 17th century. With four making up the base, the Church of the Virgin Mary sits on top like a dome. The building itself is quite similar to others around Mykonos Town, due to the same whitewashed style which keeps the sun at bay.

As you step inside, part of the church has a turquoise theme with ornate decorations such as beautiful gold tables and candlestick holders. Your flip flops will resonate on the stone floors as you continue to explore the inside and see the beautiful main chapel.

Back outside in the sunshine, the contrast between the white of the church and the blue of the sky and sea is incredible. Make sure you have plenty of memory space for photos on your camera, especially if you can stick around for sunset. With breathtaking views out across the Aegean, it's the perfect place to watch the sun disappear into the horizon, as the light changes the colour of the whitewashed walls.

As darkness begins to fall, take a short stroll over to Matoyianni Street and browse the shops and stalls. Grab a bite to eat in a taverna as you wait for the bars to get busy for the night that awaits.
