The Folklore Museum in Kardamena

As Kardamena becomes an ever more popular holiday destination, the locals have preserved what life used to be like in the village with the Folklore Museum. Learn about the traditional side of Kardamena with a visit to this interesting museum, which is also dedicated to the area's naval history.

The Folklore Museum is close to the seafront at the end of the main harbour road, and was founded to conserve the traditional culture and heritage of a home that dates back to the early 19th century. Stepping inside the museum, you'll see artefacts such as old utensils, tools and photographs, along with embroidery from nearly 100 years ago.

Kardamena has grown from its humble origins as a sleepy fishing village, and the Folklore Museum pays tribute to this. You'll find photos of old fishing boats, artefacts found in the sea, and examples of old fashioned equipment, such as the nets and wicker baskets that the fishermen used. See how their gear compares to the modern tools we have today, and imagine how much more difficult their livelihood must've been.

For such a small entrance fee, and with its position close to Kardamena's main harbour beaches, the museum makes for a lovely little stop to break up your day. Educational and interesting, you can even see demonstrations of how the old traditional weaving machines were used to make things like rugs and carpets.

After your trip to the Folklore Museum, cross the street to the beach and relax in the sunshine for the rest of the afternoon. Or book an activity with the Kardamena Watersports Centre and get ready for an adrenaline rush.
