Roman Villa of Skala
Uncover the secrets of 3rd century Greece with a visit to the ancient Roman Villa at Skala village. Once the home of a wealthy family, the villa gives a fascinating insight into Roman life as you wander across purpose built walkways around the six excavated rooms and outdoor courtyard.
Discover the villa's well-preserved, colourful mosaics, which are now protected by glass. The mosaics are works of art, telling stories of animal sacrifice and attacks from wild beasts. Although a fire is believed to have destroyed the villa, with a church later built on the site, this is still one of Kefalonia's most impressive examples of Roman life.
Visit the villa during the summer months between 9am and 3pm, or call ahead during the winter season to check opening times. The site's open every day except Monday, and entry is free.
To get to Skala, you can catch a bus from Argostoli or Poros, or hire a car and take a short drive. The villa is a five minute walk away from the village along a narrow pathway, signposted all the way.
After your visit, take a stroll through Skala itself where you'll find a traditional taverna. To make a day of it, go to the picturesque, pebbly Skala beach where you can enjoy a bite to eat at the beachside café or take a dip in the crystal clear sea.
