Beautiful beaches are a big draw for visitors on holidays to Sami. Stunning white pebbles and turquoise waters are just waiting for you over at Antisamos Beach, which is considered as one of the most beautiful spots in Kefalonia; it’s the perfect place to sunbathe, swim and snorkel.

But Sami holidays aren’t just about sun, sea and sand; there’s so much more to them than that! When you’re feeling up for a spot of adventure, you can head off on a trek through the hills on horseback, and admire views along the way.

Or, you could pay a visit to of some of the famous sites. Take a trip to the acropolis, one of the most important fortified cities in Bronze Age Greece, and the 150-million-year-old Drogarati Cave.

Take in the history

Sami has a rich history and you can see evidence of its past all around you. A great Bronze Age city can be found on the cliff and looks over the clear blue sea. During the month of August, the Monastery of Argillon hosts a belly bursting feast followed by some rustic dancing and music to help wash the meal down.

Boat trips

For those wanting to explore further afield, you can take a trip to the small island of Ithaca that played a big part in Greek mythology. During your trip you can find many different restaurants and shops to visit, making for the perfect day out.

    By taxi: They’re easy to find, especially around the resort’s harbour. They’re generally affordable for short trips and airport transfers.

    By water taxi: A fun and simple way to pop between resorts on Kefalonia’s coastline, or to reach nearby islands like Ithaca.

    Feast of Panagia Agrilia: In August, the monastery of Panagia Agrillion in Sami hosts a traditional feast in honour of the Virgin Agrilia. The festival includes a religious procession, followed by traditional music, dancing, food, and wine in town.

    Robola Wine Festival: An absolute must for wine lovers, the Robola Wine Festival takes places over two days every August in the nearby village of Fragata and celebrates the island’s wine-making tradition. You can expect lots of free robola wine to sample, served with a side of tasty Greek food and traditional live music.

    Temperature: Around 26 (°C) in the summer.

    Best time to visit: Visit in late summer for warm average temperatures.
    The Mediterranean climate means you can expect temperatures to reach the mid-20s (°C) as early as May. By July and August (that’s the hottest month of the year), it can climb to 35 (°C), and it can easily reach 30 (°C) from April to October. Beach lovers can soak up 13 hours of sunshine a day, while the strong Maestro winds offer welcome relief during this peak season. Even in mind-winter, temperatures hardly ever drop below 8ºC, but bear in mind that the Ionian Islands can be wet at this time of year and showers aren’t unheard of in summer.
