Ancient Messene Greece
The archaeological site of Ancient Messene is around 30 kilometres from Kalamata, but it's worth the drive because when you get there you'll be rewarded with one of the best preserved sites in Greece. It's fast becoming one of the most exciting places to visit in Greece as every step has a story. There's so much to look at that you could easily spend a couple of hours admiring the architecture.
The beginnings of this site dates back to the 10th century BC, so it's thousands of years old, although when the Romans took over they changed and added to it. There are the fortification walls, parts of the old theatre, the temples of Zeus and Poseidon and the sanctuaries of Ithomi all for you to look at.
Make sure you take your camera so you can capture a piece of history to take home with you.
One of the major attractions to the site is the stadium, which has stood the test of time and has now been preserved so you can appreciate it in all of its glory. Cast yourself back to the time when the Romans ruled and you'll be wandering around the spots where gladiators fought to the death . There's even an ancient throne that you can sit on so you can fully picture yourself as the leader watching the action unfolding in front of you.
