Lychnostatis Museum Greece
Get a taste of traditional Cretan life with a visit to the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum. Dip into the island's folk and cultural heritage as you make your way around this interesting attraction. Sitting right on the Bay of Malia, you can enjoy lovely views out to sea as you explore the museum. You should plan to spend at least half a day here, so make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated in the warm Mediterranean sunshine.
There are some fascinating things to see at the museum, as you wander among traditional farmer and merchant houses, and structures such as a distillery. Imagine yourself making wine or olive oil in years gone by as you peek at the old-style wine and olive presses. Then see if you can pick out the smells as you pass the herb garden, where both aromatic and medicinal herbs are grown.
Have a look at the mineral and stone exhibition, and take a seat in the auditorium for an audio-visual show describing what life used to be like on Crete. There may even be a cultural event on at the 250-seat open-air theatre. A hands-on approach is encouraged by the museum, so it's great for the kids as they pick up artefacts and smell and taste things like the plants and fruits.
You can go on a guided tour in English, and if you want to return for a second visit then it's free of charge.
After exploring the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum, if you want to go for a relaxing stroll along the coast from the museum, then it's around half an hour's walk back towards the eastern edge of the harbour and the Roman Fountain. You'll pass the Star Beach Water Park on the way, so you can scope it out for your next day out.
