Snorkelling and diving in Marsa Alam

Ever-increasing in popularity, Marsa Alam is one of the up and coming resorts along Egypt's Red Sea coast. There are lots of things to love about Marsa Alam; one of which being the resort's stunning sandy beaches. It's relatively untouched in comparison to some of the other Red Sea resorts, so you'll have no problem whiling away your time on its pristine shores, lined with palm trees and parasols.

But beaches aside, there's something else that really sets Marsa Alam apart from other resorts in the area, and that's its incredible snorkelling and diving opportunities. Granted, there's amazing sea life and coral across the majority of Egypt, but the diving in Marsa Alam is something else entirely. The area is home to some of the most famous dive sites in the world, including the infamous Elphinstone Reef, making it a must for any diving enthusiasts and even complete novices too. Here are some of the best places where you can take to the water.

Elphinstone Reef

As mentioned, this is often at the top of a diver's must-do list. It's quite likely that you'll see oceanic whitetip sharks or hammerheads around here, particularly between October and December. But you can also expect to see manta rays, dolphins and all kinds of colourful, tropical fish.

The Brother Islands

These are two islands where it's also possible to see sharks, as well as explore two shipwrecks; the Aida II and the Numidia.

Dolphin House

This is an incredible opportunity where you can witness dolphins in their own natural environment. Only a certain number of boats are allowed to stop here each day in order to preserve their habitat. But it's an unforgettable experience to be able to swim among them at sea.

Abu Dabbab

Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time diver, you won't want to miss out on a visit to Abu Dabbab Bay. It's one of the few places in the world where you can swim alongside the endangered species, the sea cow (or Dugong), in its natural surroundings. You might even meet the bay's semi-residents, Dennis and Dougal! While here, you could also see giant turtles, guitar sharks and a whole host of colourful fish species.
