Makronissos Beach in Cyprus
Cyprus has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Think powder-soft sand, crystal-clear blue water, and plenty of family-friendly activities to keep everyone happy. This is serious sandcastle territory, so bring a bucket and spade! Makronissos Beach is definitely one of the best on offer if you're looking for a great day at the beach that caters for everyone, whether you want to swim, paddle, or simply laze with a good book and a cool beer!
Where is Makronissos Beach?
Head west out of Ayia Napa city centre and 5km along the coast you'll come to the beach. During the summer it makes a welcome change from the very busy central beaches, so the trip is well worth it to find a beach with some extra space to stretch out and relax. Take the main Ayia Napa Nissi Avenue and turn left onto Makronissos Street. The beach is signposted so it's very easy to find.
Buses run regularly along the road, and it's easy to drive if you've hired a car to get around. Parking can get crowded, so if you are driving then get there early to grab a spot close to the beach, so you don't have to carry all your beach bags too far.
Two beaches for the price of one!
Makronissos beach is actually two beaches, the Western beach and the main Makronissos beach itself. The main beach tends to get a little more crowded, especially in the summer, while the West beach is quieter, and thanks to its more open position tends to have better waves. If you're planning on a little surfing or bodyboarding, this is the beach to choose.
The eastern main beach is protected from the prevailing winds, so the sea is calmer and great for the kids. The sand is very soft, and a lovely golden colour, making it ideal for sandcastles. The beach slopes down into the water at a very shallow angle, making it perfect for paddlers. It does shelve further out, so if you're a timid toe-dipper it's best to stay in the shallows rather than venturing too far out.
Water sports for everyone
From donuts to banana boats, water skiing to snorkelling, there's something for everyone of all abilities. The water sports on offer take you on top of and underneath the waves, letting you explore this great spot and have fun too. Instructors can help you get your PADI open water diving certificate, and then take you on an underwater adventure, or simply grab a life jacket, climb aboard the banana boat, and hang on!
Need some refuelling? Don't worry; there are plenty of bars and restaurants all along the beach, serving everything from ice creams and cold drinks, to full evening meals and a glass of the local wine. Makronissos beach is a Blue Flag beach, meaning you can be sure it's clean and safe for the little ones. Let them splash about while you relax on a sunbed and enjoy a peaceful day on the beach.
Then if you're in a mood for some partying in the evening, check out the Makronissos Beach Club for the biggest beach parties of the summer.
