Larnaka Medieval Castle

Discover Larnaca's turbulent history as you spend a couple of hours exploring the town's fascinating castle, while the sea laps gently at its foundations below. The perfect break from the sun lounger, Larnaka Medieval Castle is one of the town's most popular cultural attractions, and with very good reason.

As you stroll along Larnaca's main palm-lined avenue toward the southern edge of the harbour, you'll be greeted by this beautiful building, constructed with local stone and dating all the way back to the 12th century.

Inside, you'll be transported back through the centuries as you rediscover the island's captivating past. During your visit, you'll uncover the castle's important job protecting Larnaca from seafaring invaders, and its sinister past as a prison during the Cypriot Civil War. Later, at the hands of the English, it was used as a place for prisoner executions - even as recently as 1948.

Now a fascinating museum, walk through the Christian, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine eras and discover exhibits of paintings, pottery, tools and weaponry. You can even enjoy theatrical performances in the courtyard, which has been transformed into a unique open-air theatre. Tombstones and inscriptions provide plenty of photo opportunities at Larnaka Medieval Castle, while the full-size cannons are popular with children.

But perhaps the highlight is the stunning view from the top of the tower as you gaze out on crystal-clear waters, across Phinikoudes beach and over the beautiful old town. Standing in the warm afternoon sunshine, listening to the sea flowing back and forth below, you won't regret making a relaxing visit to this beautiful, well-preserved historical site.
