Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb

The most significant cultural institution to open in Croatia in a generation, Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU to use its Croatian acronym) was many decades in the planning.

Originally, this was a much smaller gallery, hidden away in the Upper Town amid the other historic and cultural treasures. The collection of mainly Yugoslav art soon outgrew this space and, following Croatian independence in the early 1990s, a site was found over the Sava river in Novi Zagreb.

The location was no coincidence. With the older side of the city brimming with attractions, ‘New Zagreb’ was characterised by the Socialist-era communal housing that ran along broad avenues. Here, where Avenija Dubrovnik meets Veceslav Holjevac, a striking building designed by Igor Franic contains a permanent collection of 12,000 items by mainly Croatian or regional artists, and showcases regularly rotating temporary shows by contemporary artists from around the world.
