Lake Jarun in Zagreb
Created for the World Student Games of 1987, a seminal sporting event that revitalised Croatia’s capital, Lake Jarun is a man-made lake in the southwest of town. Once the young athletes had left, Jarun was given over to the people of Zagreb as an easily accessible recreation area. Rowing, sailing and swimming all take place here, as well as jogging along the purpose-built track, and skateboarding. Meanwhile, the lakeside greenery attracts picnickers and Frisbee throwers.
Jarun is also known for another type of recreation, as Zagreb embraced the new wave of techno music, and the Aquarius dance club put itself at the forefront of the movement. Decades later, this lakeside spot is still going strong, decamping to the Adriatic coast in summer. Jarun also stages the annual INmusic festival, held over three days in June.
