High Line New York

Visit New York’s one-of-a-kind elevated park and see the city’s sights from above with a walk along the High Line. Starting in the Meatpacking District at Gansevoort Street, the free walkway stretches for almost one and a half miles through to 34th Street in the West Side. As you wander along the old railway line, which was abandoned in 1980 and reinvented as a park in 2009, take plenty of time to admire the amazing views, and don’t forget your camera.

With 11 different entrances, it’s easy to hop on and off the High Line to see the nearby sights. The popular Whitney Museum of American Art, which is home to a big collection from artists including Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock, is at the southern end, while Chelsea Market and Gansevoort Market are must-visits if you love your food. When you get hungry, grab a take-out and enjoy a picnic looking out across the Hudson River before continuing your walk through the park.

As you wander through the beautiful gardens, look out for the original rail tracks, temporary art installations, and even public events along the way. Cutting right through Chelsea, the High Line’s also a great place to spot modern architecture. Look out for Frank Gehry’s IAC Building and Jean Nouvel’s 100 11th Avenue apartments, two of the neighbourhood’s most iconic buildings.

If you have kids don’t miss the Pershing Square Beams play area. After you’ve walked the length of the High Line, there’s plenty to do in the surrounding area. Take your pick from a visit to Hudson River Park, Chelsea Pier, or the neighbourhood’s many great restaurants.
