British Museum

Walk through more than 70,000 exhibits as you pay a visit to one of the best museum’s in the world, the British Museum. Spanning an incredible two million years of history, there’s artefacts from civilisations including ancient Greece, the Egyptians, Anglo-Saxon times and Roman Britain, so prepare to spend an entire day as you work your way through the collections.

After stepping through the grand entrance, make your way to the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court with its jaw-dropping glass ceiling at the centre of the museum. In the middle you’ll see the Round Reading Room, which houses the desk used by Karl Marx to write Das Kapital.

As you venture through the rest of the building, be prepared to walk, as the exhibits stretch over several miles. Along the way you’ll see the Egyptian collection, which is home to the Parthenon sculptures, ancient mummies and the Rosetta Stone, making this one of the most popular parts of the museum.

With so much to see, you may prefer to focus on a few collections, whether you’re discovering medieval Europe, Oriental artefacts or an entire exhibit dedicated to living and dying.

If you have kids, keep an eye out for the free events and guides for families. If you’d like to see the museum with the help of a knowledgeable guide, there’s a number of free tours focusing on 15 different galleries each day.

The paid-for highlight tour runs on weekends, while the iPad tour is a great way to explore at your own pace. After your visit, go for a walk in nearby Russell Square or book to see a show at one of the venues close to the museum, including the Shaftesbury and Dominion theatres.
