Castle Hill Walking Tour in Budapest

Discover the huge limestone platform high above the Danube with a walking tour of Castle Hill. Home to some of the most fascinating historic sights in Budapest, your tour will take you through the city before exploring this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your three to four hour circular tour starts with a walk from Funicular to Dísz tér. To reach the starting point, ride on the funicular train or walk up through the beautiful gardens. As your tour gets underway, you’ll see Sándor Palace, home to the Hungarian President, alongside the National Dance Theatre, a converted Baroque-style church.

After arriving at the parade ground, you’ll continue on to the Holy Trinity Column, passing centuries-old Matthias Church and Fishermen’s Bastion, with its impressive views of the city, along the way.

After arriving at Holy Trinity Square, have a coffee at one of Budapest’s oldest cafés, Ruszwurm, or try some samples at the House of Hungarian Wines. Walking to Vienna Gate, which is Castle Hill’s northern entrance, you can go inside the National Archives building before going up to Maria Magdalena Tower. From there, you and your tour group will walk past 14th century houses, visiting the amazing cave network beneath the hill known as the Labyrinth of Buda Castle, before continuing on to the Royal Palace.

Arriving at the palace, spend an hour or two exploring the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the National Library. Take pictures of the lion courtyard and and Matthias Well before riding the funicular back down the hill.
