Tiergarten in Berlin

Visit Berlin’s largest park, Tiergarten, and explore its gardens that stretch over one square mile right in the heart of the city. Enter the park near the Brandenburg Gate and make your way round this former hunting ground, which was opened to the public in the 18th century by the Elector of Brandenburg, Frederick the Great.

Walk through the English-style parklands along 14 miles of pathways, and discover a huge range of visitor attractions along the way. See Tiergarten’s many statues and memorials, and climb Victory Column for impressive views across the park from its 69 metre high observation platform.

When you get back down to earth, look around the Bismarck Memorial before heading to the Soviet War Memorial. Browse the exhibitions at the House of World Cultures, see where the German President lives at Bellevue Palace and if you’re in the park on a Sunday, listen out for the bells of the Carillon.

If you have kids, pay a visit to Berlin Zoo, which you’ll find in the southwest part of Tiergarten. Look out for gorillas, pandas and polar bears. As daylight fades, visit the Gaslaternen-Freilichtmuseum (Gas Lanterns Museum), an open-air exhibit near the S-Bahn station. In the evening, the lanterns, collected from Berlin across the ages, are beautifully lit up.

Although big sections of Tiergarten were destroyed during the Second World War, restoration began in 1955 and today you’ll spot locals jogging through the park while groups of tourists explore. In the summer, nowhere in the city is better for a relaxing picnic on the lawns, with the impressive Reichstag building in view.
