Brandenburg Gate
See one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks with a trip to the Brandenburg Gate. Once separating the east from west, the gate now represents a unified Germany, making it a must-visit on your trip to the capital.
To get there, hop on the U-Bahn metro or the overground S-Bahn to Brandenburger Tor, which is just a few minutes away from the gate by foot. Arriving at Pariser Platz, you’ll see the huge Brandenburg Gate towering in front of you.
On top of the 12 column archway sits the Quadriga, a statue of a horse-drawn chariot symbolising victory. Once captured by the French and taken to Paris, the sculpture was returned to its rightful place after an eight year absence.
After taking plenty of pictures, go into the Room of Silence on the gate’s north wing for a few moments of peace and quiet. Then go and explore the square, looking out for the Academy of Arts and the French and American embassy buildings.
If you’re in Berlin over the festive period, go gift shopping at the Christmas market on Unter Den Linden, a pedestrianised street close to the Brandenburg Gate.
When you’ve finished at Brandenburg Gate, walk along the tree-lined street to Tiergarten Park and relax in the English-style gardens. If you prefer, take the ten minute walk to the Reichstag Building, where you can enjoy impressive views of the city from the glass dome. The Holocaust Memorial is also close by.
