Mount Lycabettus, Athens
At a height of 300m Mount Lycabettus offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the sprawling metropolis of Athens and the Aegean Sea beyond. At the top there's the small 18th century church of St George. Just below the summit there’s a restaurant and bar, allowing you to enjoy the best view in Athens as you devour your lunch or chill with a cool beer.
Getting there:
While there’s a funicular that can take you to the top, be aware that you will have to walk up a number of steps to get to the base station. The Evangelismos Metro station is a strenuous 650m from the funicular, with hundreds of steps to climb. The number 60 bus stops on the adjacent street but you’ll still have around 50 steps to climb. If you’re feeling energetic you can climb all the way up to the summit. As of 2023 the funicular cost is €10 return or €7 single. It’s cash only so don’t turn up expecting to pay by card, otherwise you’ll have to make a mini hike to the nearest ATM.
