Mangroves in Cayo Coco

Mangroves are trees or shrubs that flourish and grow in water. But not just any water. They tend to grow in tropical tidal climates or in swampy areas. Their hundreds of intertwining roots grow both below and above the surface creating an immersed jungle feel, which is great for exploring. Cuba is home to the most extensive mangroves in the Caribbean.

Cayo Coco and nearby Cayo Guillermo are some of the best places in Cuba to see them. Head to Cayo Guillermo and from here you can zip through the mangroves on a speedboat to see the submerged forests for yourself. Keep a close eye out and you might even spot some pelicans or pink flamingos as well as countless other tropical birds.
