What's the weather like in Texas in January?

Located in the southern USA, Texas is a huge state with diverse landscapes ranging from barren desert to vast forests and sandy beaches. Due to its size, there’s lots of different weather across Texas. Most of the east has a humid subtropical climate, while things are a lot drier in the west. January is generally the coolest month of the year across the state, with temperatures dipping towards freezing in the north east. It is warmer in the south, while there are big drops in temperature in the west at night.

Houston is close to the Gulf of Mexico coastline in the southeast of Texas, and has an average temperature of 12ºC in January, with highs of 17ºC and lows of 7ºC. The city expects around 110mm of rain, so you’ll need a waterproof if you visit this month. Further inland, Austin has similar temperatures to Houston but less than half the amount of wet weather. Temperatures are cooler in Dallas, which has highs of 12ºC and lows of 1ºC in January, while El Paso, in the far western corner of Texas, can dip below freezing at night.
