What's the weather like in California in August?

On the west coast of the USA, California is known as the ‘Golden State’ and it certainly lives up to its name in August. With lots of sunshine, warm temperatures and dry weather, August is one of the most popular months to visit this beautiful region of North America. A Mediterranean-style climate makes this a great time of year to relax on the beaches, hike in the hills or explore the cities.

In the south of California, Los Angeles has an average temperature of 22°C in August, with highs of 28°C and lows of 16°C after dark. If you visit at this time of year you’ll need your summer wardrobe for the daytime, with warmer layers for evenings out. Further north in San Francisco, temperatures are slightly cooler with highs of 22°C and lows of 13°C at night. It’s very dry right across the state in August, so it’s unlikely you’ll see any rain.
