What’s the weather like in Gran Canaria in December?
Gran Canaria’s location around 150km off the western coast of North Africa means the island enjoys warm weather with not much rain in December. As one of the ‘Islands of Eternal Spring’, Gran Canaria’s a great place for winter sun.
Microclimates
Volcanic Gran Canaria has high mountains that have a big impact on its weather. These protect the south from north easterly winds, so you'll get warmer and drier weather here; it’s cooler and wetter in the mountains themselves. Gran Canaria gets its hot weather being so close to the Sahara Desert, although winds and the cool Canary Current keep things comfortable in December.
Averages
Although it’s winter, you'll still be able to lounge around in your beach gear all day, as Gran Canaria has an average high temperature of 22ºC in December. Things get a bit cool in the evenings so don't forget to pack some warmer clothes. The average sea temperature’s 21ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from 55% to 85% or so. Average rainfall’s just 31mm across five rainy days.
Daylight
During December you can expect ten hours of daylight with six hours of sunshine each day. UV levels will be moderate so bring plenty of sun cream. Sunset’s at 6pm at the start of the month and gradually gets later.
