What’s the weather like in Sri Lanka in May?

Located in the Indian Ocean just south of the equator, Sri Lanka experiences regular dry and rainy seasons. With different weather affecting the southwestern and northeastern areas of the island, in May the yala monsoon is in full force across many of the popular coastal resorts. At this time of year the capital Colombo is hot, wet and humid, while Kandy and Nuwara Eliya in the higher regions are slightly cooler.

In Colombo, temperatures reach an average of 25oC in the daytime during the month of May, with highs of 29oC in the hottest part of the afternoon. While the sea is still lovely and warm at 29oC, the capital gets lots of wet weather with around 382mm of rain during the month. If you’re visiting at this time of year, you’ll need to bring a light rain jacket and prepare to spend time away from the beach.
