What’s the weather like in Cyprus in May?

Cyprus has one of the warmest climates in the Mediterranean because of its location close to southwest Asia, off the south coast of Turkey and north of Egypt. Temperatures are rising in May as summer approaches, and you can expect lots of sunshine and hardly any rain.

Climatic influences

The Mediterranean Sea has a big impact of Cyprus’ weather, making things cooler on the coast in May compared to places inland. There’s not much difference in weather between the north and south of the island, but the east’s a bit warmer and drier than the west because of westerly winds. The Troodos mountains are very high, Mount Olympus is almost 2,000m, and along with the Kyrenia mountains protect the east from rain.

Things are getting nice and hot in popular Paphos during May, with the average high temperature reaching 24ºC. Bring a selection of light clothes and beach gear for the days, but you'll also want to pack some warmer things for the evenings as temperatures averagely cool to 15ºC at night. The average sea temperature’s 20ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from around 50% to the high-80s. There’s not much rain in May, with Cyprus getting just five millimetres over a single day.

During May you can expect 14 hours of daylight with ten hours of sunshine each day. Take care in the sun as UV levels will be high, while sunset’s just after 7.30pm at the beginning of May and gradually gets later.
