What's the weather like in Malaysia in May?

Malaysia is in south-east Asia close to the equator and has a tropical climate bringing hot, sunny weather to the region all year round. This also means there are monsoon seasons, with the wet period on the west coast lasting from April to October, and on the east coast from November to February. If you’re visiting the popular west coast this month, you should prepare yourself for tropical downpours and bring a waterproof jacket, but you can still look forward to eight hours of sunshine each day across the region.

On popular islands such as Langkawi and Penang off the north-west coast, the average temperature is 28ºC in May. With highs of 32ºC and lows of 24ºC, air conditioning and high factor sun cream are essentials for your holiday. More than half of the days in May expect rain on the islands, with a total of around 250mm over the course of the month. Further south in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, temperatures are the same but there’s less rain, with 190mm predicted for the month. If you want to go swimming in the Malacca Strait, the waters are 30ºC in May, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
