What's the weather like in China in May?

A vast country with landscapes ranging from beautiful coasts to mountains and cities, China is a country of great contrasts. There are big differences in the weather depending on where you go, but most of the country’s starting to warm up this month. The weather can still be a bit unpredictable however, such as in eastern regions, where Shanghai is found. May is the start of the wet season for some parts of China, so be sure to check what the weather’s like where you plan to visit.

Averages

In May, the average temperature in the capital Beijing is 20ºC, with highs of 26ºC and lows of 13ºC. It’s quite dry here at this time of year, with less than 30mm of rain expected over six days. It’s a different story in Shanghai, which has similar temperatures but has 115mm of rain predicted for the month. It’s even wetter still in Hong Kong, where there’s nearly 160mm of rain forecast in May. With highs of 29ºC, the temperature’s hotter too, while the South China Sea waters are a warm 27ºC at this time.
