Escape the crowds with holidays to Katelios, a pretty Greek fishing village in southern Kefalonia. Set against a backdrop of unspoilt scenery, tucked away between pine-covered hills and a sun-soaked sandy coast, it’s the perfect spot for a peaceful island break. Katelios is brimming with traditional Greek charm, think quaint taverns and a bustling harbour, and its Mediterranean beaches are ideal for a spot of relaxation. When you’re ready to explore beyond the shoreline, you can head into the lush countryside and trek through the hills. It’s a great place to get away from it all.
Things to do
Tranquil beaches, crystal-clear waters and Mediterranean sunshine are all part of Katelios’ appeal. You can make the most of Kefalonia’s stunning natural landscape from here, by trekking through the eucalyptus and verdant pine trees. Keen hikers won’t be able to resist heading uphill to enjoy panoramic views across the coast.
If water sports are more your thing, it’s well worth taking a water taxi over to the lively village of Skala, where you can try everything from scuba diving to windsurfing. When the sun goes down, you’ll be more than ready for mouth-watering fresh seafood at a local taverna. Oh, and a glass of Robola wine, too.
Excellent beaches
There are several beaches near to Katelios. Its closest has crystal clear waters and is a mix of sand and shingle. If you want something a little sandier, then Mounda Beach is not far away and has a long stretch of soft white sand. Mounda Beach is also protected, as it’s a popular loggerhead turtle nesting area. If you’re lucky enough, you could witness the newborn turtles’ first steps and watch their natural instincts take over as they flee for the water.
History and culture
The charming resort was originally a busy fishing village and although a couple of boats still work from here today, the development of tourism in the area has seen the village grow in size. From the coast you can see the island of Zante, whilst views inland are nestled with thick, green agriculture. Katelios has a relaxed atmosphere, with great maritime traditions set into their way of life.
Food and drink
As well as its serene setting, Katelios is a place where fish are caught daily and the local cuisine is not only fresh, but also delicious. There are some amazing restaurants and bars in the area, all with a chilled, feel-good atmosphere. Dine at the contemporary Rosebud Bistro for fabulous food and spotless surroundings.
Nemesis is popular for its fruity cocktails, exceptionally friendly service and beautiful beachside location and it’s among the many bars that are open till late throughout high season.
The Cozy Bar & Restaurant is excellent value for both food and drink. Its unique décor and lively music adds to the welcoming smile you receive on entry by staff and leave with at the end of a well-cooked meal.

By car: Pick up a hire car at the airport and explore Kefalonia in your own time. It’s the best way to get around the island, and it’ll give you easy access to the beaches, too. Kefalonia is small and simple to navigate from Katelios, and you’ll enjoy beautiful coastal views from the comfort of your car.
By water taxi: This is a fun and speedy way of reaching nearby resorts from Katelios, so how about a trip to Skala or Poros.
By taxi: They’re readily available in Kefalonia, and can be a good option for short journeys and airport transfers. But it’s always best to call in advance.
Wine festival: In August, the village of Fragata hosts the annual Robola Wine Festival. It’s a chance for locals and visitors to celebrate the fruits of the island, and you can enjoy three delicious days of free wine tasting and food, with a side of music.
Carnival: It’s a brilliant place to celebrate Carnival, which is traditionally held on the last day before Lent. You’ll find colourful parades and floats across the island, plus lots of activities for kids.

If you like it hot, you’ll love a holiday here in summer. Glorious highs of 30 (°C) are common, which is ideal beach weather. You can always cool off by taking a dip in the sea. If you’re more of an explorer, book your Katelios holidays for spring or autumn. It’s cooler and the village is much quieter. As for winter, it’s the wettest time of year, but you can still expect plenty of sunshine. Temperatures rarely drop below 12 (°C) throughout the season, so pick an off-peak season if you really want some peace and quiet.
